This graduate course addresses the history and development of the criminal courts in America. Topics include comparison of state and federal courts, federal procedures, basic rights and liberties of all U.S. citizens and those within the United States including victims and the accused. In addition, the roles of judges, prosecuting attorneys, defense counsel, police, and probation officers and other court-related personnel in the criminal court process, diversion, alternative dispute resolutions and specialty courts as well as the media's influence on the criminal justice system are covered in great detail.
